I had decided what I wanted to do on this 75th birthday. That was to go get oysters and champagne at Anchor Oyster Bar on Castro in SF. I wait to call a cab until I’m ready to walk out the door. At that moment, Nick shows up with two dozen roses and a bunch of household items, like dish soap. Wow! I cut and arrange the flowers, give Nick the errand list and set off.
There was a long wait at Anchor. Nearly two hours. I’d brought a book, but ended up talking with Rick, from Sacramento. He was there with his family celebrating his next-day birthday as well. High five! I learned about his pets, 3 cockatiels, 2 cats and 2 dogs. That’s a lot of pets. So, I knew he was a kind person. But gee. He was walking with a cane, that’s a lot of animals to care for. He had a system. His cane was also interesting, it had an animal head (he told me, but I didn’t hear which animal). So, then we talked about canes, something we had in common. This one was from Ukraine, designed and made by artisans there, going to support their livelihood.
Once seated, I ordered what I intended, a half dozen oysters and a Caesar salad. Beautiful! All. I savored every bite. Let that linger.
Afterwards I walked across two intersections, which was tricky. Wind had started and drivers disregard handicapped crossings. Adding to that are the “safety bumps”, which are treacherous to a cane. My destination was ZGO Perfumery which carries my tea. They are wonderful and it is an oasis. Fait accomplit! Finally home. Lots to be grateful for.
