The two are not related, that I know of.
I have developed a fondness for pistachios. Seemingly benign. It’s my go-to snack while watching TV, which is often benign as well. Generally I’m careful about what I eat. With the distraction of TV, I’m not so thoughtful. Fortunately pistachios have shells, so that slows it down.
I became alarmed because I, in earlier times, developed a severe allergy to almonds. Yes severe, anaphylactic shock severe. This is not pleasant. Mostly, I like to breathe. Internal swelling is no fun, either. The hospital is not my favorite destination.
So, I’ve put the breaks on my new pistachio affection. Moderation.
Today, a mountain lion was spotted crossing traffic in San Francisco. He was surrounded by animal control people in the photo, one appearing to hold a stun gun. The lion was large. And, I would think totally disoriented. Did he escape from the zoo? I am very sad for this particular beast. If he was trying to escape, his future will be up to humans. No free-on-the-range.
When I was boarding dogs, (one at a time in my home), I went to the local shelter to see first hand how these abandoned animals were treated. Sure, they got walked daily in groups, otherwise the individual dogs would have to be very ‘socialized’ to adjust . Most runaways are not. The inside ‘exercise area’ consisted of about 40’ x 30’ max. All off leash together. Afterwards, they would be returned to cages. I don’t know what the answer is. The Humane Society has the best intentions. But I’d hate to be a dog whose instinct was to escape and end up in jail.

Tomorrow, Brian and Florencia’s monthly Salon is featuring a jazz pianist, Anni Kiviniemi and a lecture by Alana Conner, who has the distinction of being the oldest cyclist to go around the world. 22 countries. Didn’t say how old she was, I’ll find out tomorrow. Quite a feat for anyone!
