Brian and Florencia had their monthly Artist’s Salon which I always look forward to. Today their guests were a jazz pianist from Finland, Anni Kiviniemi and Alana Conner, who bicycled around the world. Both were extraordinary.
Anni’s take on jazz was partially founded in folk tunes. The syncopation and reference to both idioms was quite charming. At one point, she used a hand held keyboard which she blew into, a melodium.
Alana, who’s writing a book to be titled, “All the Way Around the World”, did just that on a bicycle. It was a big escape after a divorce. She has a PhD. Stanford and knows about documentation. What a trip! Very much female empowering. Forget about being a “good girl”. Think “woman”.
I took a seat at the far side of the audience, second row. It was SRO. Neighbor Javier came up behind me, standing. A man and child seated next to me appeared to be connected with Anni. He was extraordinarily polite. Seeing my cane (had to step over it), he brought me a glass of wine from the bar. Then exchanged it because it was red and I prefer white. Polite! Meanwhile, Javier starts whispering about the pianist, I couldn’t hear Javier. And rubbing my shoulders. I tilted my ear and told him he was a tease. True.
I was delighted by the show. Told Brian he was an excellent curator as well as a great artist. True, again.
Then happy to be home to the toilet.
