Doctor hits patient in the eye

That’s not true. That is what the ophthalmologist suggested I tell people to explain my black eye. For real. He said that, to be humorous? Whatever, I do have a black eye now that the bandage has been removed. And what a relief. (No Bandage). While waiting in the exam room, there was a small chart on the wall showing four types of cataracts. I didn’t get close enough to read it, but I did ask the doctor which I had? His response: a combination. He has a very busy practice and, no doubt, wasn’t inclined to educate.

So, I looked it up. My self-educated guess is that the now-history cataract was part ‘Nuclear’ affecting the center lense and ‘posterior subcapsular’ which connects the eye nerve to the nervous system. The Nuclear would go along with my eyes becoming more yellow brown and less deep brown. But that’s just my recently concocted theory. I think it’s fair to want to know.

My take home instructions included a plastic shield for the eye and tape. I’m to apply it every night. So, I’m going to gouge myself with my pillows? Yes, sir.

Lourdes visited this afternoon and brought five large, white mums. Pretty. She’s trying to decide whether or not to go back to San Sebastián, Spain for a month. She’d need to sublet her apartment here. Our conversation centered around cultural differences. My European friends that live in the U.S. all say Emphatically they would not move back. That’s a small census, and San Francisco is not your average American city. But what is? Boise, Idaho? All of us like to feel appreciated for our own achievements. Personally, I am glad for the choices I’ve made. A few mistakes. I am human. But what I’ve learned along the way and I hope have offered. I can count on both hands with fingers left over how many people I have met that have been born and raised in SF. Eight. Unlike L.A., we live much closer together. Yes, San Sebastián may be more family oriented. Fewer people move away. Mom expects you for Sunday dinner. The friends we make where we settle are most often by choice. Geography and common interests. That’s not new. Unlike my new retina lense!

Most of all, I am grateful. This is a thank you, sincerely.
