Dolly and Gloria

Today we lost Gloria Steinhem. 92 is a good run. She really shook up the status quo. I remember reading Ms. Magazine when I was in college. She put feminism on the big map. Listening to the NPR obituary, it clarified one detail or misconception I had. I knew she had worked at a Playboy Club as a Bunny. What I didn’t know was that, at the time, she was a journalist and ‘went undercover’ to get a story about discrimination. Bella Abzug and the “Second Sex” author Simone de Beauvoir, were her predecessors, but Gloria Steinham took it a needed step further.

One of the issues she got recognition for was inequality of pay between men and women. Which brings me to the Dolly Parton connection. “Nine to Five”, the movie, is based on that fact. And, of course, Dolly Parton wrote the song and starred. Everyone, no matter gender, should give thanks.

Extra plus: the latest New Yorker magazine has Dolly on the cover. The title is: “Pure Gold”.

Tomorrow is my much awaited podiatry appointment. Nothing will be happier than my right foot. I am trying not to get my hopes up too much, as in ‘a miracle’. But hey, if you don’t wish, how can a wish come true?
