Movies and horses

Saturday night I binged. 3 movies in a row. “Time to dance” was about an East Indian couple, not at first but came together, for a major Ballroom Dance competition (guess who won). Next was “Green Book” featuring an accomplished, refined Black pianist on tour to several Southern cities in 1962 with a white working class driver. The two had to confront their dissimilarities along with Jim Crow community reactions as they traveled. It ended up a buddy story. (Spoiler). Then PBS was showing National Velvet. In all three movies everyone was a winner at the finale. Yay!

Seeing National Velvet again reminded me to check on when the Kentucky Derby is. Also, I reminisced about the time my older sister was living in San Diego and she offered me her old Toyota if I could come down from San Francisco and pick it up. Getting to the horse part, my first stop driving North was the Santa Ana Race track. You see, the sister of a friend in SF, Doreen Stone invited me to visit. She worked caring for the race horses in the stables. So, I did. I stayed overnight in her trailer and she introduced me to these outstanding, beautiful equine animals head to tail. I was just an observer, I didn’t touch them. I know that some race horses are mistreated, but I saw no such evidence during my fascinating mini tour. I could only admire their athleticism and intelligence.

The rest of the trip was normal. I made one more stop. I don’t like driving that much, so I stayed at a small off the highway motel with a pool. Swimming is a great way to de-kink the muscles. And there aren’t many outdoor pools in SF where it’s not warm enough, generally.

Back home. It was a fun trip and a new-to-me car!
