When the choices are sparse, return to the classics. In that spirit, I’m watching Lawrence of Arabia. I’m about half way through. I’ve seen it before, of course, but I can’t remember when or where. It was released in 1962. It’s unlikely I saw it then, as it would have been hard for an eleven year old to sit through a 3 hr. 40 min film. I’m guessing it would have been sometime in my 20’s. Indelible cinematography.
British colonization certainly had its foes. Peter O’Toole’s eyes are quite blue. There’s a scene where, in the desert heat, one man in the group of fifty, falls off his camel. Omar Sharif advises O’Toole to leave him there, which is inhumane and O’Toole/Lawrence goes back for him. Arduous and death defying, He succeeds. While he is getting much needed rest, Sharif burns his British uniform and leaves him Arab attire. There’s a fun moment when O’Toole uses a thick knife blade as a mirror to do a self fashion show. And Lawrence of Arabia is born.
They meet up with one tribe that rides horses. In the desert? That I couldn’t figure out. Oh well, just half way through.
Tomorrow is another Brian Salon, I think. Lourdes is supposed to meet me to go together. If I have the date wrong, we’ll simply catch up on her recent trip to Spain. A demain.
